Paul, Kent

Ford Fiesta

Having owned this car from new I know it fairly well. In 2015, after a very hot spell of weather I noticed that the speedometer was not only sticking but over reading. This was followed by the internal indicator dashboard lights failing intermittently. Ford replaced this unit for GP 260.00 Now in 2017 the first reasonably warm day has resulted in the speedometer needle sticking under acceleration and then under-reading. Stopping and turning the ignition off then on resets the needle but only until the next hot spell. The fact that the car interior naturally gets very hot on sunny days is the only think I can think of to link the two events. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with the dashboard cluster unit, are Ford aware of it and of any easy and permanent fix? Thanks for any advice. Paul C.

Answers

Have never heard of this before and can only be a issue with the instrument cluster. Your Ford dealer can try a software update on the cluster first (if available) to try and fix, if there is not one or it does not fix it will be a new cluster John westwood from Essex

How do I reattach the painted circular cover (which you usually press to enable access to fill up with petrol) to the rectangular-shaped, grid-style black plastic backing? It has come off. Following extensive googling etc. I understand that it is attached by some tiny black plastic clips on the grid-style backing and needs to be slid horizontally back into position. However, I would appreciate some guidance/instructions on how to do this. Also, the circular painted cover doesn't appear to be totally flat anymore. Am I alright to drive the car without it?

Hi there, I am a proud owner of nice ST grey fiesta flame 54 plate. the car drives fantastically, after my mechanic MOT'd the car, i went to his garage to collect my key, i noticed the engine management light was on. the next day when i went to collect the car, i discovered why the light was on. for some reason my speedometer works upto 20mph then the needle drops to 0mph and my mileage appears as '------' after doing some research online, the fiesta is common with this and ford owners forums suggest the VSS sensor, i am just wondering where is the VSS sensor locator under my bonnet? or is there anything else i should check? Thank you

Answers

The VSS is the vehicle speed sensor and is located in the gearbox at the top under the bonnet. Is held in with a clip and pin and has to be removed and the sensor then pulled out of gearbox. (It can be a a bit of a pain to change) John westwood from Essex

when the engine is running there is fumes coming from the back of the engine, when i put my hand down the back i can feel air coming from somewhere, it sounds like a steam engine as well, checked the oil lovely and clean, water is not contaminated, could it be a gasket that is blowing?.

Answers

Yes, possibly exhaust manifold gasket. Feel around for the air being blown onto your hand before the engine gets to full temperature so as not to burn your hand. Mick from Portugal

hi Mick, thank you for your assistance in this matter, the only thing is on our fiesta the exhaust manifold is on the front of the engine, but the blowing is at the rear off the engine, am i missing something ie is the gasket one piece that fits the whole engine, i am so sorry but i am not very good with these engines. regards chris from West Midlands

In that case it won't be the manifold gasket. The only gasket that fits the entire engine is the head gasket, if that has gone I would expect to see oil in the water (and vice-versa) and a loss of water. I don't know what year your Fiesta is but on a Mark 1 I seem to recall their being a flexible joint and gasket at the rear of the engine where the exhaust joins the downpipe. Have a look underneath and if you've got such a joint do the hand test around it. Has your Fiesta got an EGR valvel? If so check the pipework from the exhaust through the EGR valve (including that valve) and on wards to the intake manifold Mick from Portugal

Hi Mick, thank you for the information, i have checked the oil and water and they are both perfectly clean, there is no gunge on the oil cap or anywhere, i think that it seems to be coming from a gasket quite close to the rocker gasket at the back of the engine, when we run the engine it sounds like a steam engine 2 puffing, dont know if this helps, if the rocker gasket is leaking could this happen?. chris from West Midlands

It is possible but I've never experienced a leaking rocker gasket making noise like a steam engine (or any other noise for that matter). Mick from Portugal

My 2003 Ford Fiesta LX petrol has got a strange issue, when you accidentally cutoff (off from clutch while start moving in 1st gear)the car won't start for around 2 hours and when you try again after 2 hours it works fine. It doesn't work, even if tried with jump leads within 2 hours of being cutoff and produce a clicking noise when trying to start the engine.

2002 fiesta Zetec with 11,000 miles on the clock has developed a ver quiet high pitched beep which happens intermittently both when the engine is on and also strangely when engine is off. Can you tell me what might be causing it please and whether it is important to get it checked out

Answers

Update to my beep problem. It appears that my darling dad had put a smoke alarm with low battery in the boot and that was making the beep! So the moral is, before taking the car to the garage, check the boot?? Val Jefferys from Norfolk
