Heater control valve is notorious on Puma. I have had a couple fail. Recently though, I found the fault to be the potentiometer (heater control switch electrical connector) to be faulty. Replacement and worked fine. Puma Cup from East Sussex

Yep - sounds like the HCV. However don't buy a cheap and cheerful one - buy the Ford only one (£50) and they work perfectly. Ash from Kent

My Ford Puma`s temperature gauge goes into the red after driving for a couple of minutes and stays there. The fan kicks in but the temperature gauge stays right in the red. I have had the temperature control valve changed, a second valve changed, it had a new water pump done before I bought it, I`ve had the cambelt changed, even tried a new cap on the coolant tank but still no success. I have had it tested and it is not electrical. I have been told that maybe it could be the head gasket. The engine is not overheating though, nothing smells. I have had the car 2 months and most of that time it has been in the garage and it`s still there now. I don`t really want to get rid of the car as she is in perfect condition apart from this problem and drives like a dream. Can anyone help?

I’ve got a Ford Puma and recently the dashboard has been acting really strangely. When I am driving the speedo and rev counter will drop to zero, the fuel gauge will read as full even if the tank is not full. The engine doesn`t stall though and after a short while all of the dials will start working again. This happens intermittently but it is starting to happen more and more often. Does anyone have any idea what the causes might be?

My Millenium Ford Puma kept losing water so I have had the water pump replaced and the cam belt. It was running fine for a day but has now started losing water again. I fill it up and it`s fine when driving, but as soon as I stop and turn the car off it dumps all of the water. Does anyone have any idea what else could be wrong? (Millenium)

Answers

Where does the water come from when it leaks. Sounds it maybe a head gasket fault or maybe a split hose. Also check the Heater Control Valve as they are prone to crack the black plastic pipes on the unit. Puma Cup from East Sussex

My Ford Puma doesn`t always want to start. It will turn over but not actually start. I thought it might be the battery so changed it, however I’m still having the same issue. Any ideas? (1.4)

Answers

Not enough info: Does it turn over as quickly as it should do? Does it attempt to fire at all? Are any warning lights illuminated? Has the car been regularly serviced? Does it use any oil or coolant? John Greenslade from Powys

It’s been serviced yearly. It’s got water and oil in and plenty of fuel. It literally just turns over just doesn’t seem to "ignite" Vickie from England

If the car is turning over okay it won’t be the battery. Get it`s code read, it might be a weak crank or camshaft sensor – Martin from Essex

The indicators on my Ford Puma have stopped working (after a few months of them working on and off) and the hazard light does not work. The window wipers worked fine. I purchased a replacement wiper stalk and indicator stalk but this fuses out the window wipers, so then they don’t work. I got another set and the same thing happened. The garage say there is no problem with the electrics. Does anyone know what else could be wrong?

I believe the culprit may be drive shaft(s). Under load from the off it is more noticeable. They are easy to replace. Puma Cup from East Sussex

I have a Ford Puma 2001 which is currently not starting. I believe it`s the starter motor but cannot locate this. Can anyone help me where to find it and if it`s easier to access from under the car or above?

Answers

Hi there, it’s definitely easy to access underneath: Basically, undo the battery first. There are 3 bolts attaching the starter motor (black cylinder) to the gearbox and nuts attaching the electrical contacts. It’s pretty straight forward. But before you get too carried away, check that the battery contacts are done up very tightly in case its not the starter motor at all. Good luck! Shane from England

I have the same problem, just been told that there is an earth problem from the fuse/relay box on the front left of the engine and need to find the wire and tighten it this may solve it instead a new starter motor Jamie Clarke from Essex

Hi. I have a problem with my Ford Puma`s rear light and my main light to light up the speedo and rev counter, My brake lights come on but my lights at the back are not on and the speedo light won`t come on. I have checked all the fuses and there seems to none blown, I have also sprayed wd40 in light stalks at the back of the car and replaced the bulbs, but am still having the same problem. Any suggestions?

Answers

It’s more than likely the light stork, this is one unit that also has the indicator stork with it. You undo 2 screws on the side and replace the whole unit. You can pick them up for about £15 from a scrapyard.- from Cornwall.

On my Ford Puma the head gasket recently went and has been re-skimmed along with a new cambelt. Whenever I try and start the car now, unless I dip the accelerator the car won’t fire. It was never an issue before the head gasket went. Any ideas what might be going on?

Answers

Hiya, I’ve had exactly the same problem. Unless there is a major problem like your battery or starter motor, I’ve been reading through forums and would suggest its the camshaft position sensor. I think it is a cheap fix, could be a case of taking it off and cleaning it and putting it back on again. I will let you know if I have been successful because that’s what I’m going to try next Paul Wilkinson from England

I just serviced a Puma before it went in for an MOT was running a bit rough and give it pedal, after removed oil replaced filters plugs which were a rusty colour, changed the lot now not having to use pedal on start up, big difference in performance, may not be problem on your vehicle but sorted mine. Now smiling, want another 2 Paul from Scotland

Your throttle body is worn, either replace it or a cheap easy fix drill a 2mm hole in the throttle flap Paul Smith from Hampshire

I had a problem with the air in blowing only hot. I bad the heating control value changed and it did nothing. Then the internal panel changed. About 40 quid for the part. It was just switch inside. Mine wasn’t giving off a smell tho. Good luck Lou from England
