Having a real problem with my steering on 2008 2.2 diesel ford s max. It started off with it making a strange grinding/whirring noise any time I turned the steering. Within a day it was getting really difficult to turn. It was like the power steering had gone but only for a second or two then it would allow me to turn. Mechanic said it was an electrical fault not a power steering issue. Brought it to an electrical specialist who had real problems fixing it. Eventually replaced motors and circuit boards and all sorts and got it working but was never right. Anytime I was sitting in traffic for longer than 5-10 mins I could hear and feel it playing up again. Anyone had similar issues and know how to resolve this?

Hi I went to start my push start 2011 s max and car wont start.Electrics was going mad with dash board light flicking on and off and a clicking noise from back of car where the fuses are on the left .Any help would be appreciated thanks

Answers

Clicking noise usually means the starter solenoid is chattering because the battery doesn't have enough power to hold it engaged. First thing to do is to check your battery. Hugh from City of Glasgow

When we turn our engine on, the radio has stopped coming on automatically, so you have to press it on, then there are lines where the clock should be, after a while the volume goes up on its own and the clock goes back to normal which means it's ok, but the other day while this was happening the fan came on automatically, also when you turn off engine the radio stays on, any ideas at all greatly appreciated, Thanks Endri.

I've had the car for about 5 months now and noticed that when I try to close the rear passenger windows they go up, don't fully close then open again. I Pull the switch up again to close the window and it does the same as the first try but on the third attempt they close? I'm sure my last small did it as well. How do I get the rear windows to close on the first attempt?

Answers

I had this before on a 2011 S Max, there was an issue with switch / sensor inside the door and had to be replaced. But you can also try resetting the windows - fully close the window by holding the button, when the window is fully closed release the button for a second and then hold in the close position for five seconds this should reset the window and might cure your problem.do the same for the down position Dave from Greater London

i am having the problem, front wipers not working and I have a message on the dash board stating " Alarm service required" after looking at the ford forums it seems this is common problem. When the Horn siren becomes damp this affects the wipers. I located the horn siren unit under the passenger wheel arch but I couldn't unplug the unit, I stuck my arm up there as I can get to it but it doesn't seem to pull out. I don't want to use pliers and risk damage. How does this unplug? Is it a simple pull out or are there lugs to undo, I cannot feel any lugs. My car is an s-max 59 plate. Appreciate any help. Thanks

Answers

Hi Tony. I'm having the same problem as you. It started out as a wiper problem. As soon as I went above 25 mph the wipers would go constantly. I got an electric specialist to fix this but he had a lot of trouble getting it sorted then within a day the steering started playing up. It was making a strange noise then got hard to turn to the point it was very dangerous. The same guy tried sorting it and did so but if I was ever sitting idle for longer than five minutes it would start playing up again and now it has gone bad again to the point where it is dangerous again. By any chance did you find out what was causing your faults and how was it put right? Gary from County Tyrone

Hi, have had my car since March (Oct now) I have been rescued by the RAC twice, with the same problem! Drove my car, experienced unwanted revving, loss of power and smoke from the exhaust. The first time was white/blue smoke, second time was black. Passer by thought car was on fire and called fire service, it was that bad!!!! Had a oil and filter change 6wks ago after the recovery team removed 2.5ltrs of oil the first time! Once we had let the car settle on the second rescue the oil had shown twice as much oil!!! Anyone experience this? RAC guy said to try injector, leaking diesel into the oil!???? Any thoughts. Many thanks x

I serviced my s-max and the guy could not start it, then he had to use easystart, started and worked for couple of weeks that I had to change the water hoose pipe. During this time, the mechanic pull out a lot of wiring and the fuel injector. After that time, it started to cause starting problem. initially would not start once in 2 days and now i have to park up the hill to start it. Any idea why it is not starting as the there is no issue with the battery or fuel pump.

Our S-MAX has developed a fault whereby it warns us that the boot is open when it is not. This morning the car alarm went off, I suspect this is because the car thinks the boot is open. I have put WD40 on the locking mechanism but this has had no effect. The car is a 2011 model with about 30k miles. Overall the car has been great with only a faulty screen wash sensor replaced last year. Am hoping this is a similar issue?

Hi there did you find out the problem ? I too have a 2011 titanium x sport with less than 30k on the clock. Last week battery went flat. Charged up and went flat again. But a few things happen when it was charged up. When I opened the car the hazards came on and the boot would open itself. Then there were times when I opened the car and the alarm would start and stop. I'm just looking for a few pointers before Ford charge me a fortune and not solve the problem Marty Martyn from Middlesbrough

Have a 2009 Smax, it started last year blowing brake light bulbs every few weeks. Went to ford for a service in feb and they just said they had noticed it had a major electrical fault but had sorted it so the bulbs wouldn't blow. Since then, whenever it rains particularly, the internal alarm and note on dash says the boot is open. Also, the boot won't open until the rear lights go out if you use the key fob and press the car open button, we either press only the boot one or have to wait the 30secs for rest lights to fade. Every time we touch the brake it does it too. It's infuriating! Worried it will take loads of time (labour cost!) to fix and tempted to just part ex it tbh. If you find out the fault Id be interested! Ellen from Cheshire

Hi, I changed the battery last week and everything seemed fine. Then engine management light has come on. Think the code is P0006A. Which I think is air flow problem. This reset but came back on. Only thing I can think of is that I had to take out the air filter to replace the battery and I might have knocked a sensor or losen a wire ? It will be going to get checked out soon.
