Nissan Qashqai

I would like to know what is the normal idle speed on a Nissan Qashqai petrol version that is 10 years old? Mine lies at 800rpm. Is this too high please? Also, it takes quite a while to go down to this level after removing my foot off the gas pedal. What could be the fault that is causing this? Thanks.

Answers

800 rpm is about right for your car once the engine is at normal running temperature. The engine revs dying down slowly is because of the emissions control system in your car and is controlled by the ECU. If your engine is running at high revs and died down suddenly when you lifted your foot it would go through a phase of running too lean which is bad for producting nitrous oxides (NOx) so the ECU controls the fuel flow to avoid this. Passenger floor has disintegrated on left hand side. Discovered when straightening mat yesterday. Have been getting in and out due to disability and usually place left foot in this area but never imagined flooring would break. Has anyone else had this issue and how do we fix it?

Answers

Apparently there were issues with cabin noise in the original X-Trail (the T30) and to overcome this the floor on the second generation T31 had box sections which were lower than the rest of the floor and filled with insulation padding. The floor hasn't broken it probably just requires additional padding / replacement insulation padding. Clive Redhead from Cheshire

Hi, my Nissan Qashqai`s dashboard screen has lost all information and now says ’PTR PLACE’. The car itself is still running the same but not displaying things like petrol, mileage and revs etc. What does this mean?

Answers

Hello Gil, I have the same problem. Did you get an answer? Michel from Switzerland

This happened to me today after having to jump start from another vehicle. No idea what "PTR PLACE" actually MEANS, and neither did the Service people at my dealership (nor indeed did they know what to do beyond suggesting that I get AA Home Start to bring the vehicle in for diagnostics), but I tried "re-booting" the computer by taking off the -neg connector on the battery and reattaching it some 10 minutes later. All returned to normal. What it seems to be is not a blown fuse, but a computer overload. Apparently jump starting modern cars with their oh-so-useful computer banks using the time-honoured +POS and -NEG terminals is a no-no: I've been told that one should attach +POS as usual but -NEG to another metal part of the engine. I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS. AND IT SOUNDS DANGEROUS TO ME! Ian from Kent

The car jerks and cuts off while driving. No warning. While driving I would see the dashboard lights all turned on, the engine would have cut off at that time. This does not happen frequently, (once in a very long time). Sometimes while driving the car would behave as if I am driving with the handbrake on, you would feel that the engine is behaving as if I stepped on the brake pedal, all of a sudden it will pick up speed and drive normally as if nothing happened. What is the problem? This car started misbehaving last year November. Different mechanics are suspecting different things ranging from pencil coils, sensors, petrol filters and petrol pump. What is the problem? I see many people have similar issues with this car, is it a manufacturer's fault? Car make: Nissan Almera, year 2005, engine capacity: 1.6

As you have said quite correctly the ogygen sensor, termed in the book as the Lamba sensor is at fault as described when the engine is cold it's fine, the Lamba sensors job is to monitor the fuel system when the tip of the sensor is cold, it gives a reasonably rich mix to the fuel injectors, but when the engine warms up all readings to the management system go out the window, it may starve the engine of fuel, or go the other way and give to much fuel, both will be enough to stop your engine, as all have described above, easy fix unscrew the sensor the one visible on the top of the front pipe with wires attatched, only problem is the management light will stay on, buy a code reader on eBay and switch it off money well spent, cure guarenteed, Colin h South Wales UK Colin H from Vale of Glamorgan

Hello there if your Nissan Almera cuts out for no reason, with no lights on the dashboard, it will be the crank sencer. I hope this helps you out, other topics on Almeras if the yello engine light comes on the book will say it is a misfire but its not its the timing chain, to keep your Almera happy its better to service the car every 15000 miles it keeps the timing chain from slipping .I've had lots of these cars in the past and I've got one now 2002 Nissan Amera twister 1.5, these cars are the best Clint Robinson from Northumberland

I have a Qashqai of a similar age and I also had the same problem soon after I bought it. I went back to my dealer who first explained that the engine must be warm and that also if the battery had run a little low in charge due to Air con etc. Secondly it was explained, and this is the answer because it worked for me, get into the car and press nothing until your seatbelt is on and gear is in neutral. Then press start and drive off. When you come to a stop put gear in neutral, apply handbrake and take your foot off the clutch. Providing you have auto stop start selected it will work. steve from Gloucestershire

Stop start presents a large load on the vehicle`s battery. As a result the vehicle will not stop start on a cold engine especially in colder weather, it is also unlikely to stop start under heavy battery loads: - headlights and fog lights, electrical driven heaters (demists) and seat heaters etc. The vehicle constantly monitors the batteries` condition (its charge state) to ensure it has the ability to execute a restart, and will not stop the engine until it senses the battery is at a suitable level. I now have the same problem. I bought a new Qashqai about 3 weeks ago, now it has about 500 Km (310 miles). It was fine until yesterday, wich strangeli coincides with the CVT software update (PM463 Recall), carried out by the dealer. Now Stop & Start has sopped working under normal conditions. It only works when main beams are ON !? Can you beleave this??? It always worked with the air conditioning ON, and it still does, although it doesn't work with only Ventilation/Heating (A/C OFF), even in AUTO mode. This is very odd too, because the A/C takes more power than normal ventilation, i think... Gustavo Tavares from Portugal

Purchased a three-year-old 1.6 Qashai diesel and after about a month start stop system fault came up on the dashboard, checked everywhere on the Internet and nobody had the answer then the battery started to drain overnight as far as I can gather the start stop system will not work correctly if your battery is slightly faulty in any way, if the voltage is below 12 V when you first try and start the car the system will know by the voltage drop there is a fault and disable the start stop system, fitted a new Exide battery and the car is like brand-new, starts first time every time with no error messages HANNAH LEE from Warwickshire

The Nissan main dealer recommended starting off in first gear but instead of just depressing the clutch and changing into second gear, change into neutral and let the clutch up. Then depress it again and change into second. This is a procedure which used to be called double-de-clutching in very early cars. Follow the same procedure for third and fourth gears etc. It certainly worked for my vehicle. They said it resets the computer program which manages stop-start. Richard Turner from North Yorkshire

System fault - Start/stop error which came up on a 3 hour journey. At the end of the journey the car wouldnt start. RAC came out to find the battery was completely dead. Jump started me and went to Nissan dealer who knew immediately what it was. 1 year later and the error is back intermittently. Booked in with the dealer but 3 week wait. but Im expecting to break down again before then. This is one of MANY electrical faults with the Qashqai. Cant wait to get rid of it. Oliver from North Yorkshire

There is a big 'stop start' control unit behind the battery. If the car has been jump-started, or put on charge with the charger turned on before it's connected, or charged with a normal lead-acid battery charger, this can cause the computer in the unit to crash, and may also kill the battery. When charging a modern car connect the charger to the car, then turn it on. You do not want sparks causing voltage spikes crashing computer systems. If a stop-start car you will need a charger for stop-start batteries, an old-school lead-acid battery charger will not work. It may fry the battery, or fail to charge it, and probably both. It took me weeks to persuade my boss to get a battery charger for stop-start batteries, but since we did (under £100) we have not had to buy very expansive AGM batteries. We can now re-charge them when flat instead of ruin them with the wrong type of charger. Mark from Oxfordshire

Pathfinder 3.0 litre Diesel 6 cylinder. 2012 build 60,000klms, Warning light came on dash indicated that there was water in fuel, I decided to change the fuel filter. The car was going okay before I changed the filter but after I put in the new filter the engine would not start? Tried priming with manual pump & electric pump, still will not start. Uninstalled the filter & reinstalled the old filter still will not start. It will not prime diesel. The fuel filter is correctly installed. Do I need to reboot the computer as fuel is not going to the filter? The computer is showing an error, how do I reboot the computer to factory settings? I think the problem is in the computer but I don't know how to fix the problem. Fuel was primed to the filter but I can't get the car started.

Answers

Check your electric pump hasn't blown its fuse, you'll need to check your handbook for location and amperage. Even though you are priming the system with the lever it still needs fuel dellivery under pressure (usually 50 to 60 psi up to the HP injection pump. After it starts the LP side of the injection pump takes over as the lift pump and the electrric pump is disconnected. When you crank it, have you tried bleeding it with the leak-off return line disconnected to see if fuel flows through? Does the truck start with Easy Start? You might get enough revs going that way to suck fuel through. Usual way to reset system is to disconnect negative battery terminal for at least 30 minutes, should re-set when reconnected. Lastly do you have any fault code eg P0093 or P1272? Hugh from City of Glasgow

I had my 2005 nissan march serviced and now the power steering light is illuminated, hence no power steering. Any advice? Could a blown fuse cause this problem?

Nissan Almera Tino

My car drives well until recently when it started misbehaving. Whenever I stop at traffic the engine goes off. Few days later it won't start at first start. Then hours later it will start but when put in fear the car would not drive. After many efforts I then called for AA. This recovery man put his diagnostic machine on yet nothing was recorded. I was taken to a garage which could not find any thing. I was to move my car from the garage. At home I invited an auto electrician who placed his diagnostic machine on yet no communication. Car now is not starting at all. What might be the problem and any possible solution? Thanks

Answers

You might need a new wiring harness for your car. A friend of mine had an olde Almra Tino and he had similar trouble and had to have a new wiring harness fitted. Some Nissans had some trouble with their wiring. Hugh from City of Glasgow

I have a 2005 Nissan Almera 1.5 s , when driving my front passenger brake and rear driver brake come on and start slowing the vehicle, I've changed calipers, fitted a new ABS unit and flex hoses but it still happens at the distance of about 8 mile, any solutions would be appreciated

Answers

Your car has a diagonally split braking system It seems that the push rod between the brake pedal and the master cylinder has been over-adjusted and causing hydraulic pressure to be applied to the system. Check behind the brake pedals and see if there is enough free play between the push rod and the pedal, probably in the region of 5 to 9 mm. Hugh from Cavan

Nissan Micra C+C

One of the gas struts in the boot of my wife’s Nissan Micra C+C has failed, making it very heavy to lift (almost impossible for her). Our local dealer has quoted £90 for a pair of gas struts plus £650 in labour to replace them. They say the whole of the roof mechanism has to be removed! I can’t believe Nissan would make it that difficult and I noticed someone said that he had changed them on his daughter’s car. Can anyone offer information/advice on how difficult or easy it actually is and maybe point me in the direction of some instructions? Thanks.

Hi, I have the same problem with my micra c+c... Dealers have quoted me the same.. I've been holding mine up with a broom handle, I'm sure it would decapitate my head if my broom fails.. Anyhow I've been to a local garage.. They gave me a price for part... But carnt give me a price on fitting as they say they will have to remove backseats it's a big job... So I won't no the price until they have finished the job, which isn't much good to me, I need to know the price before hand, so I've looked on eBay can get struts £24 for 2... It also shows how to fit, which takes the guy 5 mins, looks very easy for a fella anyway.. So I would also love a reply, as I think as a woman knowing nothing about cars, there trying to rip me off... Cheers Belinda :-( Belinda from South Yorkshire

Was having same problem as David with my 04 Nissan micra. My husband bought the struts on eBay and watched how to fit them on YouTube (he's not a mechanic) , a five min job at a cost of £20. only tools needed was a screw driver. Now working perfectly. just removed one from my wifes car to get part number. Removed rear seat base(pulls off but tight)two bolts to remove back cushion.. Pull back drivers door seal enough to get at the plastic panel which I removed . Then open the boot and support the boot. use a screwdriver to prise off the locking clip and prise the pin out. Back into the car and use a small screwdriver to unclip the swivel joint. The strut should be off now. When I get them I will refit this one first and then start on the other side. It takes more than 5 mins. more like 30 mins to 1 hr each side. I am a mechanic and couldn't do it that quick robert from Durham

In the boot there is a cloth trim much the same as a roller blind is the best way I can explain it. You need to pull it out on the roller and attach to the retaining brackets. It is in your handbook including diagram. Hope this helps Stan from Warwickshire

Mine has started doing the same, but only if I start the engine. It will work if I put the roof down just with the ignition on. You could try that or, have you found another solution ? pistonbroke from South Yorkshire

Thank you so much pistonbroke from South Yorkshire. I have had my Nissan CC 2+2 Karrman since 2008 and absolutely love it, until last year the roof worked fine. I took it to the dealership for a new roof seal and since then the roof had refused to open properly. The alarm would go off saying the boot roller blind was not engaged even when it was. I tried working the micro switch on the left of the blind manually and used WD 40 on it but nothing worked, it would work sometimes then not others. This year I feared a big bill or get rid, which I did not want to do, even though it is almost 11 years old it has had minimal repairs done and is in very good condition with low mileage. The dealership told me this model is hard to find and they could sell it with ease but owners of this model do not want to sell. Me either! Your trick of opening the roof using just the ignition without starting the car WORKS!!! Nellythefrog from Derbyshire

Sir Looking under the front seat of my car I have noticed what looks to be 12v wire and connectors ..could there be a reason for this and is there likely to be power supplied to these connectors. Many thanks Paul

they could be your air bag connectors, if your air bag warning light goes off when you start up, leave well alone, I had a problem with my air bag warning light staying on, changed the connectors and may sure the connectors were firm, I reset the computer, and not had a problem since, if you don't want to pay £35 to reset at a diagnostic center, you can do it easily yourself, email me and I will tell you how john payne from Nottinghamshire

Nissan Almera Tino

My Nissan Almera Tino 1800cc 53 plate has an intermittent problem. Sometimes it runs perfectly other times it loses speed and then lurches forward (which is getting dangerous) and other times it just totally dies. When it stops altogether I have to leave it for a few minutes and then start it up. It always starts no problem. Prior to either stopping or slowing right down it has hiccups. It's been checked by diagnostics and there is no fault showing. The engine management light isn't on. I think it's dirty fuel so I need to know where the fuel filter is situated and how to change it. Could someone please advise? Or if I am wrong in my assumption could someone point me in the right direction? Thank you
