Car is making a screaming noise when turning the car on and when accelaertaing. Then a message comes up saying "oil pressure fault" left it for a few days and then engine light comes on saying "engine fault get Virchow repaired". Took it to one local garage charged us £100 to change oil and filter. But nothing changed car was still making noise and message were still displaying. The first garage said we would also have to pay £300 for him to take apart the engine but it might not nessacarily be fixed after. So me and my partner decided to try someone else. We then went to a second garage and he checked it over for us and said he think it may be a crank shaft which would be very expensive to fix but he thinks that Peugeot 208 have had a recall of the same situation to mine and to take it to my dealer and ask them. I feel like it sounds to good to be true if that is the case, had anyone else experienced anything similar

My 2013 208 GTi has suffered with the Engine Warning light from the day I got it. It is constantly being reset, but Peugeot are unable to say why. I have been told that it is possible to re-set this light by using a code reader and resetting the codes. Is this the case and if so can you advise what reader/re-setting tool I would need. I appreciate that this may be a risky solution, but I am prepared to take this chance Thanks for any advice Harry

hi, my 208 2012 (62) plate 1.2 - 3 cylinder engine seems to be burning a litre of oil a month? that's how much I'm currently putting in each month. It started happening around the 40,000 miles. It was still happening at 45,000 miles. I have taken it to the main dealers a couple of times and to different main dealers but they cant find anything wrong with it. It has been serviced by a main dealer since the start. A month ago the car broke down and the garage said that the CAT converter has gone, so I explained the issues I've been having with the car and they said it could be down to that? After the car was fixed I was still having the same issues. has anybody else has this problem with the same engine?

Answers

Hi Luke i am having the same problem with my 208 2013 plate1.2, it is at this moment at my local peugeot garage having a new engine & Cat put in. Peugeot have admitted there is a fault & are prepared to pay half the repair bill but i think they should pay it all. Did you get any help with your repair bill? Mike from Perth and Kinross

Hi Luke MY answer is same as Mike. Would be very interested in whether Mike has managed to get full payment? Marie Souter from Perth and Kinross

I have brought my 208 a few weeks ago. From the start, the display screen does not provide any information under the driving section, i.e. How many miles left per tank of petrol etc. I think it's stuck in factory settings but can't get any joy from the dealers who seem happy to leave as is. Previous 2008 from 2014 had full information under the driving display so this doesn't feel right. Any ideas?

I recently purchased a Peugeot GT line 208- i have had it for 2 weeks ( now 1000Ks on the dial) Driving it yesterday at 80KPH on the freeway the engine suddenly shuddered and I lost power and slowed to 40KMH, I pressed the accelerator and nothing,so I limped along for 200 metres and stopped. A red sign flashed intermittently stating "Major Engine failure, please contact your Peugeot immediately. This could have been a potentially dangerous situation had the traffic been heavier and I was unable to pullover without someone running into the back of me. They towed it away to the nearest dealership as it was the weekend and everything's closed! I will know tomorrow. Has anyone experienced this scary situation- reminiscent of the VW cars power failure issue of 2015

Answers

Yep, The same thing happened to me four times over 8 months and 4000 miles at random intervals. Disconnecting the battery fixes the problem but also clears the error code so the dealer will not fix it under warranty without a code. On the fourth occasion I limped the car back to the dealer with the error code (P1339 - cylinder 3 coil problem) and the dealer simply switched coils 1 and 3 to see if it made any difference. No, it didn't - failed again after 60 miles, so I drove the car to the nearest VW dealer and part-exchanged it against a new Polo. Until you have experienced this type of total, unexpected power failure you don't realize how dangerous it can be. Dealer totally unsympathetic and I'm glad to be rid of the car. wilywhitewombat from Herefordshire

I fear for you with this car. I had a 208 1.6 HDIe and have NEVER owned a car with as many engine problems. They were almost all to do with the engine management system. Barely a week would go by without another light and terrifying beeping sound coming on. I spent a fortune replacing filters, sensors, converters etc etc. Eventually after yet another engine management light incident I was told I needed a new alternator and battery, "just £1600 you know". I cut my losses and sold the heap of junk for £3000 after having spent a similar amount on repairs. I since have bought a £1500 9 year old VW Polo and it hasn't given me any bother in 15,000 miles. HI. My car engine light came on and the power was then restricted. I pulled over a few 100 metres down the road. Turned it off and back on. It was still there. Left it a few minutes. Turned it back on and the light had gone. I've then had a good run in it and the power etc is back to normal. Could it be possible bad part of petrol had gone through the engine.? Thanks

My car suddenly became very slow to go up hills and if you went down into first gear it would suddenly come to life and fly up the hill, then suddenly it developed a ticking noise. I took it to the local Peugeot dealer who said they were waiting for a took to take the top of the engine off, they had it three weeks and nothing was done. So my local garage went and collected it but say they cannot find where the fault is. At first they thought it was the timing chain, but found it wasn't that, they say it could be the Sensors, Variable Valve timing sprockets or Variable Valve control sprockets but will have to replace each thing individually to find out what it is. They cannot run the engine with the rocket off as theinlet gas covers the rocket cover. Im not sure what all this means, have you any idea what could be the problem?

Answers

If you're having trouble with the VVT sensors and dephaser actuators you would have been well advised to have it repaired by the Peugeot dealer rather than by an auto repair shop that doesn't have the tools, the knowledge or experience to repair the system Hugh from City of Glasgow

I have had the same problem on my 208 allure 1.2, 40,000 km. Car loses power, petrol consumption goes up and serious engine fault message displays. Taken car to Peugeot dealer/service and they said low cylinder pressure. Not sure of all ins and outs, but upshot is that they are replacing the engine. None in New Zealand, no eta on arrival. Peugeot gone silent. Based on my experience you are about to have serious problems. Carole Woollett from New Zealand

My car sounds like it's about to stall when I am sat at traffic lights and junctions, I.e. when idle. Got a mechanic to look at it and he found that I had left my oil cap off and there was oil everywhere. However, he thinks it may be dodgy petrol rather than anything to do with the oil. Not sure what to do. Grateful for any help.

I bought a 14 plate 208 in January from a Peugeot dealership. Within 5 days the car would not start at all so the battery was replaced. Since then the clock on the central panel has not been keeping time and after the car has been parked up for a few hours, on turning on the ignition I get the "going into economy mode message" appear. The car has been back 3 times so far and had to software upgrades (really don't think this is the problem). Yesterday the car was completely dead! Central locking wouldn't work, could only open driver door manually, car wouldn't start, the ignition didn't even click. Needless to say the car is being collected by the dealership again today. Has anyone else experienced this fault?? Fed up of being fobbed off - very close to returning the car as not fit for purpose.

mine is 208 1.6 automatic. each time the car is left unused for more than 3-4 days the battery dischages. already replaced battery twice in less than 2 years. garage could not find any leak. alternator is fine. has anybody had similar issue?

Answers

Something is draining the battery overnight, sometimes the alarm system will do it if it has its own separate battery which is failing and draws current from the main battery when stopped. Try disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery post and put a test meter between it and the battery terminal making sure you have good connections. Turn on ignition (do not start) and check for current flow. Turn off ignition switch and allow all systems to power down and enter sleep mode - 10 minutes max. Check for any parasitic drain in the system, from memory 50 to 60 milliamps should be OK but not 200 or 300 millliamps. If you find you have too heavy a drain start disconnecting fuses to see if you can identify the faulty system. Hugh from City of Glasgow

Hi :) my car is due a service (I have it booked in for next week). The last couple of days, when I turn my ignition on, for around 10-20 seconds the emissions light (orange not with an ! Or red or flashing just stationary) comes on- this then disappears and doesn't return until the car is next turned on! Does this mean there is a fault if it's only lit up for such a small amount of time? If so would this be detected during my service?

My wife's car 1.2 vti active has had an intermittent problem?, first time turned ignition on did it's test then the fuel gauge dropped down to empty, however turned ignition off and on then all seemed fine. Yesterday turned ignition on everything came on as normal, then all dashboard lights including mileage/trip meter went off? Tried to start and it started? So what is causing problem have already checked feed wire to fusebox as stared elsewhere on the QA page. It is secure so what else could it be? Your assistance with this would be gratefully appreciated.

Occasionally after being parked when I first drive off the rear nearside makes a loud cracking noise. It's almost as if the wheel is stuck. The car is going in for its second service and I've advised them of this and they are going to run a diagnostic but I wondered if anyone else had had the same issue. I have a service plan but worried they might try saying that it's something outside of the plan and charge me a fortune. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi, approximately 3-4 times out of 10 when I pull off from stationery the gears judder making the whole car judder for a second or 2. This is really frustrating and embarrassing when I have friends in the car with me. Does anyone know what this could be? Is it something that anyone has had fixed by Peugeot? I love my car but this one thing is making me think about using a different car manufacturer when I renew later this year. many thanks.

Answers

This is happening to me. I keep thinking my car is about to stall, even though it is an automatic. I've only had it 5 months but it's still under Peugout 3 year warranty. It's at the peugeot garage now and they tell me it could be the gearbox or it could be wear and tear. It's only 2.5 years old, how could it be wear and tear? Which of course isn't covered by the warranty. Surely it's the gearbox, which is covered by warranty. Surely...I love my car too, but I have a feeling that this is a problem that will only get worse. I’ve had my (64 plate) 208 1.6D manual, for about 18months. Everything has been fine but last week I had a problem with 3rd gear. I had been stationary for a very long time in rush hour traffic so the engine had stopped. When I eventually pulled away and moved up to 3rd gear I could not engage it. It took 3 or 4 attempts with a fair amount of gear crunching before it worked. For the remainder of the drive to work, I had the same problem going up or down to 3rd. The next day it was better with only 1 in 3 attempts causing a problem. And now, 3 days later, it only happens very occasionally, but not as bad as when it started. There is no problem with the drive when 3rd is engaged. And no problem at all when selecting the other gears. Could this be a gearbox problem, clutch problem or something else? I am confused as to why it seems to have almost fixed itself if it was mechanical. Maybe there is software issue that has adapted itself for worn parts!

Answers

I had this same problem and it went away just until the warranty ran out. It came back and I discovered the synchro gear had gone. Make sure you report it to the dealer in writing, so you've got evidence that there has been a problem. Jon Bracewell from Suffolk
