get fault codes with scanner read, sounds like faulty sensor or LIMP mode activating to protect motor from damage. Easy way is read codes and then take necessary steps. David Lyster from South Africa

I have just found out that the rear exhaust box for my vehicle costs between £520 and £650. Does anyone make a pattern part which is cheaper? This is a horrendous price just because it's a genuine Landover part.

Answers

put free flow pipe and delete egr sensor , although im not sure if it would pass regulation standard in UK, but definately cheaper option or else try breaker yards for a box make sure it is not contaminated with oil should be ok for a while then. David Lyster from South Africa

Can you help please my freelander has started emiting smoke via the exhaust there was no warning it just started and is getting worse can you maybe explain what might be causing it. Thank you R Goodlad

Answers

turbo vacuum sensor or turbo might be going, fuel pressure switch could also be messing about over fueling would give you black smoke , blue smoke means oil and turbo or could also be split turbo pipes . David Lyster from South Africa

ran out of diesel, first time EVER! after that during two weeks it started as normal then one day after doing a bit of shopping, came out and it wouldn't start. turned over as normal but just wouldn't start. for some reason it did finally start. the following day when i went to start the car it turned over but wouldn't start. there was the sound of the pump but NOTHING! had it towed to the garage who did a thorough check and found everything, according to the computer and parts of the system they were able to check manually, like pressure from the pump, diesel arriving, etc,ok. they tried it with the starter pilot and it fired up immediately! turned the engine off and wouldn't re start. they then pushed the car to see if it would start and it fired after two meters!! they're good mechanics, honest, and said they were baffled! they called landrover who suggested perhaps it was an electrical conflict with the starter motor and the engine which they've seen before. they said they changed the starter motor and it worked! somebody else suggested, because i ran out of diesel, it could be the catalyst converter if indeed it has one. if it was the catalyst converter, would it start by pushing or using the starter pilot? any ideas before i BUY a starter just to see if it is that??

Answers

I think you overcranked starter motor and cooked the starter trying to start. The diesel engine sometimes needs to be bled at injectors to remove any air lock in system. If you have been cranking away to no avail then youve probably damaged starter motor and or overheated loom. Catalytic converter would have nothing to do with running out of fuel. If its blocked remove lambda sensor and allow exhaust to vent through locating hole temp until you can have converter changed. Get diesel to bleed through and remove regulator switch till you see clear flow of diesel coming through , then car will start guaranteed. David Lyster from South Africa

My Freelander just started smoking and jerking and cut out and it doesn't want to sart anymore. What is wrong with the engine?

Answers

Fuel pressure regulator screws into end of fuel rail with 3 wires. Check connections first and trace wiring through loom for continuity if all ok replace regulator. Also check relays in fusebox - engine compartment, but more than likely is fuel pressure regulator. David Lyster from South Africa

Hello. I want to fit a Detachable Tow Bar to my car but I am being told that there are concerns about the towing weight rating. I shall sometimes tow approx. 3000kg. What do you recommend. Regards Stewart Jones

The spec on Range Rover suggests hat 3000kg is the max the vehicle can tow, however there may be limitations with a detatchable.. need to contact Witter or other towbar manufacturer to get definitive answer R Evans from Caerphilly

My Td4 Land Rover Freelander’s engine cranks fine but fails to catch. When spraying quick start into the inlet the engine catches and runs normally thereafter, but it will not restart a few seconds after switching off. I have replaced the injectors, ECU and mass airflow meter and I have checked the fuel booster pump. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where else to look? Any help would be appreciated. (Td4)

Answers

I would get the compression checked out if it needs quick start just to get it going. Also, but not likely, the cold start system. Mike Webster from Cheshire

Hi Pieter-I wish I had a simple answer for your problem, but, having similar problems with my TD4, I have been battling non-stop for 2 weeks to resolve the issue(s). Have you perhaps found the cause of the problem? Gerhardt Nell from South Africa

I have an 11 plate Land Rover Freelander SD4 that has done 48K miles. I find that when I pull away the clutch feels like it is slipping and then it drives okay afterwards. The dealership will be checking it over but I wondered if others have had a similar experience and is it the start of something big going wrong? Please can anyone advise? Thank you. (SD4)

Answers

Hi, my 2011 sd4 auto sounds like it is wheel spinning on gravel when pulling away or sometimes changing gear on a hill, is this the same thing? Dealer tells me it is the turbo gate! You can make it do it by holding footbrake and trying to pull away. It is going back to the dealer next week. Do you think it is the same noise? Steve Jackman from England

How can I get into my car when the battery is dead and central locking is on without any damage being done? Thanks.

Answers

Hi there, the obvious answer is to use your key, but I’m assuming that’s not an option, so your next best bet is to jack up the car, get another car and some jumper leads, connect the red cable to the part of your starter motor that comes in from the battery, the black to the chasis, leave it for a little. This should get you enough power to use your key fob George M from Australia
