Skoda Fabia 2007

This is my second Fabia, the first was the earlier model/shape, and generally I have been very pleased. I discovered last weekend that I had 3"+ water in the spare tyre well. Has anyone else suffered from leaks? Needless to say it has just come out of the warranty period.

Answers

Dear Helen, I had the same issue with our Fabia 2008. I discovered it in June 2010. They needed to pull off the whole rear bumper and added some additional seals. It was free of charge as the car was still under its warranty period. I purchased the extended warranty package for 4 yrs. I highly recommend that Fabia owners check the spare tyre well after heavy rain to find out this issue soon. Regards Miroslav from Czech Republic

My BMW did this after 10 or so years. That was from poor rear window trims. The rear window itself is actually bonded in, so the trims do not seal. So the water would drain into the spare wheel well. For my BMW there is a drain plug. Drained the water (no rust). I just check the spare wheel well periodically (e.g. when checking spare wheel tyre pressure, or after heavy rain). I replaced the window trims too Simon Hooker from England

I have just had my car back from the repairers having had a new rear bumper fitted after and accident. I had received a call from the garage when they took the car in saying there was water in the spare wheel compartment.. I said this was a result of the accident since I hadn't had a problem before that, plus that my previous Fabia suffered the same after that had a bump on the back which did not even damage the bumper only the rear light. That time my local garage solved the problem by replacing the rubber flaps on a vent. This time the garage is trying say that this had been an ongoing problem and now I'm having to wait for this to be taken up by my insurance company. This is one of the Nationwide garage groups. After approximately driving for 45 minutes the glow plug indicator light comes on and continues to flash. If I stop, switch off the engine and re-start, the light goes out but will again continue to similarly flash after about another 30 minutes of driving. There is no effect on the running and performance of the engine. The car is regularly serviced by a skoda dealer and has only covered 15000 miles in three and a half years.

How do you get at the heater blower resistor to change it.

Answers

it all depends what year your car is? also it depends on if you have digital climatic control to adjust temperature and fan speed or the manual twist controls. if your car is before 2007 then it is relatively easy just remove passenger glove box and you see the resistor mounted into the fan and pollen filter housing it has a bayonet style light bulb fitting where you just twist it ninety degrees and it will pull out. however if you car is 2007 on wards then google it plenty of threads. The problem with 2007 cars and on wards is that the lower glove box on these cars is part of the dashboard hence it cannot be removed with out removing the whole dash assembly to gain access. the upper glove box is easy to remove two screws and it just pulls out then the passenger airbag needs to be removed to gain access the the resistor which is visible from the hole left where the air bag sits. if your car has digital climatic control then it is a bit of a night mare as the resistor is a different type and also it has to be loosened through the pollen filter housing and access is very difficult although it is held in place by a single torque bolt visible by looking upwards through pollen filter housing with a torch! I am trying to change one as we speak and struggling with it thinking of drilling a small hole so I can get access to the torque bolt easily and push a blanking grommet in the whole afterwards! the hole will be 12mm or so and be in the ducting next to the removable pollen filter cover. if your cars has no digital climate control then it is easy! ishfaq hussain from West Midlands

Skoda Fabia Estate 2006

I bought my Skoda Fabia Estate in October and all was okay for a while, then it started to get a ’hesitation’, which feels almost like the car hiccups, a pause then it goes again. The garage changed the EGR valve to see if this solved the problem but it hasn’t. Also it feels like I have to drive it ’hard’ to get anywhere and it also feels like it is juddering. Fuel consumption has also dropped since the new EGR valve was fitted. It`s going in the garage again but any ideas would be welcome? (1.9tdi elegance)

I have had my car from new and the original hand brake lasted for 5-6 years. I have had to have it replaced every year since. I have not change the way I drive the car. Apart from poor quality handbrake cables being fitted is there any other reason why the handbrake will continue to stretch so that the brake lever ends up being fully up and not stopping the car from moving?

I used to own real skodas ahhh the days but having 8 years experience of vw audi and now of my sons mk1 fabia am hitting simular issue . Have you had the brake shoes renewed as polo ones are smaller is it disc or shoes on the rear as my lads shoes were incorrect ehich adds what else was replaced wrong could this be you mikemansell42@gmail.com from South Yorkshire

Kate, are you sure that it's the handbrake cables that are stretching each time.. or just being told that by the garage. When you fit a new set of cables, they are likely to stretch a little bit before they gain their full tensile strength. What may be more feasible is that 1. your shoes have not been properly adjusted with the correct clearance and are wearing quicker and 2. may have been cheaper quality than original... also causing them to wear quicker than genuine parts. Answers

Do you mean that reverse gear won't engage, or that it won't move off in reverse? If the latter, this sounds like the Fabia's well-known problem of the rear brake drum sticking after the car has stood overnight in damp air. It's very unlikely to damage anything even though it feels and sounds drastic, but I'd keep starting off forwards if that makes it release more easily. The latest Fabia (2015-on) shouldn't have the problem as it has disc brakes at the rear. David from Cambridgeshire

Hi all, I,m about to bid on a low miles 07 fabia vrs tdi. Recently heard about water ingress problems. If this is true, is there a permanent fix for this,or will problem be ongoing?

Answers

Water ingress is prevalent on older models and is caused when rain water enters door glass and seal on doors. The glue used by Skoda to seal the door card plastic skin on the inside deteriorates over time allowing rainwater to drain down over the door sill rubber making the carpets wet. The remedy is to re-seal the plastic film around the edges with silicon sealant or other suitable product. Skoda did my Fabia for 125£. victor cottam from Somerset

Our Skoda Fabia Estate’s tailgate is permanently locked and the lever beside the driver`s seat will not open it. Does anybody know what I can do please?

Answers

Maybe something has been trapped or it has had a breakage in the wiring. Here's what you can do: Sit in the boot and pride off the cover that hides the catch with a flathead screwdriver. There is a orange lever on the catch so if you move the lever the car boot will open. Joe Chaplin from Kent

I had the same problem. The answer given here led me to the solution, however what had happened was that a lever towards the lower right of the area exposed when the cover was removed had ridden up over the orange plastic which forms part of the mechanism, and become stuck there. This is the lever that the electronic handle on the outside moves; it pushes it up against the orange plastic to open the catch. But it was unable to move because of the pressure against the plastic. The solution was to force the top of this lever towards the right (with the help of a screwdriver), off the orange plastic, so it could once again move freely. Hi, I have recently bought a secondhand 2005 Skoda Fabia in amazing condition, but it has started steaming up inside even if I haven’t been in it for over 24 hours. Then this morning it was frozen on the inside, to the extent that I had to use de-icer on it. Is this a common problem? I spoke to a dealership and they said they could look at it for £100 which I don’t have to spend at the minute. Can I get it looked at by any garage? I just don’t want to keep having to use a towel to see out of my screen everyday. Can anyone offer any help please?

Answers

The cause of the condensation is most likely leaking rear door seals. If you check the carpet in the rear foot wells, underneath the protective mats, it is likely to be damp or, as in my case, sopping wet. You can find out a lot more about this problem, and solutions to resolve it, on the briskoda.net web site which I have found to be extremely useful. It would appear to be a very common problem so you’re not alone! Paul Andrews from Wrexham

Hi, chances are like anything vag, it’s the weather shields inside the door that’s failed. It happened to mine and my mates mk2 golf gti just the same. It can be fixed cheaply by removing the door cards and replacing it with good thick plastic sheeting and some rtv sealant or something similar that will last. Tell tail signs are to open the back doors after rainfall or car wash and check for dampness in the carpet and/or small puddles gathering on the inside of the door sill seal. Hope this helps. smartguy1290@hotmail.com Guy from Perthshire

Yes, this is a common problem. I get ice on the inside of my Skoda Fabia 1.2 06 plate after condensation builds up then a cold night. I have recently changed the cabin filter on the underside of the passenger side dashboard which may help but think it is just one of these things. Regards Graham Mitchell from West Lothian (Linlithgowshire)

Hi Chole, this is a well know problem with the Fabia. There are some great videos on YouTube showing you how to do it. This seems to be a much better fix than taking it back to Skoda where the new seals will in time fail again! Regards Paul Reynolds from Staffordshire

When I first bought my Fabia a year ago I had condensation on my windows constantly even in warm weather. I searched the internet for a solution to the damp problem and eventually found one that has worked for me. It was suggested that 5 minutes or so away from my destination I put the fan on full, turn the heater to maximum and open the front windows a crack to help draw the moisture out. This I did during several consecutive journeys with great results as I now no longer have this problem. I continue to follow the same procedure every now and then just to alleviate any damp that might have built up in the car from wet clothing or boots. H Brown from West Midlands

When I open the doors on my Skoda Octavia Estate water (about 1/4 of a cupful) that had collected inside the door drips out onto the ground. Surely this is not correct? The dealer twice has told me that nothing is wrong. Any ideas?

Answers

That’s common on many cars. Rain or condensation on the window glass exterior can get past the glass door seal, collects at the base of the door and drains out through the drain holes as the door is opened. Nothing to worry about at all Kieron Day from Hampshire

Don't agree on this one. Any water being retained is a problem and the quantity mentioned here, which may be being trapped between the door seals, can result in corrosion in the long term and could penetrate into the car and soak the mats. Skoda probably know that they have a problem here, but are perhaps hoping that it will go away! Bob from Cornwall

Skoda Fabia

Hi, Went to drive my Skoda Fabia off driveway today. Put in first gear, released handbrake and as I moved forward it made a horrible noise underneath as I was dragging a box under front of vehicle. Reversed with no problem and moved forward a couple of times. It seemed to release and I was able to drive up road, made a slight metallic noise as I drove but then everything returned to normal. This happened once before about two weeks ago, again from stationary position in traffic. What could it be

Your rear drum brakes have stuck on - its a common problem. If the car is wet when parked or you have recently washed it before parking it, it tends to be worse. The grinding and intiial friction you can feel is the brake shoes not releasing fully from the drum so you have to 'drag' them free. Once this happens, you should be fine. In extreme circumstances you will find that it is entirely possible to drive with the back wheels locked until they free up! Reverse first wherever possible to free them up first, but no big deal either way. You're not doing any real damage to the car or the drums as long as you do this gently. As you probably already know - this wont happen at all if the car is driven regularly. Rob from West Midlands

When opening my Skoda Octavia all the windows open at the same time. Why does it do this? (1.9 tdi)

Answers

That will be because you’re holding the unlock button down on the fob for more than 10secs, you can also close them remotely too, holding the lock button. That, or the button is sticking. You can get this feature disabled by the Skoda Dealer. Andy Mc from Hampshire

Skoda Octavia Estate 2011

I have a Skoda Octavia Estate and the windows open by themselves. Can anybody help?

Answers

If you hold down the remote unlock button for a while, this can cause all windows to open if the control system has been programmed to do so. It is the reverse of holding down the lock button and seeing any open windows close as the car is locked. If you are not using the remote (and it is not being accidentally operated in your pocket, for instance) then the car will need looking at by a garage Kieron Day from Hampshire
