My problem is my rear left side back door top latch will not work on the lever I've checked and it looks like the cable connecting the top catch has snapped How easy is this to change

Answers

easy fix, a bit tight in the door panel but I have changed the bottom catch and re-attached the top one a few times, careful not to lose the small plastic clip that attaches the rod to the release catch. it can fall into the door but is generally easy to find with a bit of wire. steve abrahams from Lincolnshire

Hi, I have just bought a Pilote Galaxy 74 on a Peugeot 320 chassis. It has a straight turbo 2.5 td engine. Plenty of power at low speeds/gears but just done our first long run and found it will not go over 60 mph and when faced with a slight incline the speed drops away. We have not overloaded it and travel with empty water tanks. We got 29mpg on motorways and 27 on other roads. It has had a new clutch and only done 35000 miles. Has anyone any ideas please as nothing obvious is showing up?.

Answers

is the turbo working ? the waste gate might be stuck open or one of the hoses faulty get it checked out. I would never travel with empty water tanks I would always have some water. if you break down and cant make a cup of tea or flush the loo you will wish you had at least left it quarter full b graves from Kent

This might be a redundant answer.......have you opened it up? Find a stretch of empty road and give it some. My van struggled when I first bought it and being a delivery driver I know all about thrashing a van.....it was the first thing I did when the missus was looking the other way. Since then the van drives fine. Don't take it much past 5 grand and for gods sake make sure the cam belt is a recent vintage. The huge cloud of black smoke should look really impressive, second and third gear into fifth and you should notice a difference. See you on the road. William Clarke from Staffordshire

Hi, Brian, Many thanks for your help. 6 Peugeot engineers from two Peugeot commercial garages have driven it and tested the turbo. They say the 10 pipes are all ok and the turbo is working correctly. A dealer at the caravan show at Maidstone said it was not unusual on this model. To keep weightless we travel with minimum water for the journey. I will probably trade it in at the end of the year. Many thanks again. Geoff Geoff Rowe from Essex

Hi All, Eventually found the answer with M & C Diesels at Ardleigh, Nr Colchester. A broken end to the rod controlling waste management. They were unable to find a spare so manufactured one for me and fitted it within the hour. Would highly recommend this garage. Van now pulls well and can overtake lorries with ease. 2008 expert professional, with 257,000 miles, regularly serviced every 10,000 miles. Driving the other day, van went into " slow / limp" mode, I was doing 60 mph@2000 rpm, when I tried to accelerate, there was no response, but it still plodded long, I pulled up and van cut out and wouldn't start..Its having starting issues, according to diagnostics, everything is fine, no broken sensors and everything appears to be working ok, am getting a good fuel flow and good pressure when ignition switched on. Running through diagnostics it's communicating and can see live information when trying to start. Getting round 150 bar when ingintion is turned on, when tiring to start the pressure drops, which indicates to me that the pressure / dump / return value ( what ever the correct terminology is ) is getting a signal saying that it's full / too much fuel... But with diagnostics it's still saying everything is fine... Have tried new pump, egr value, sensors etc...... I'm getting NO fault codes or waning lights, I'm erring towards an electical issue, has anyone experienced anything like this that could point me in the right direction.

Answers

Has your vehicle got diesel particulate filter fitted (DPF) ? If so it sounds as if it has operated and needs resetting. When it gets clogged it puts vehicle into limp mode. It can be cleared if it is still running by putting it in a low gear and driving at high revs, the extra heat generated burns off the soot and generally solves the problem other wise it is a garage job. stan coldron from South Yorkshire

Thank you Jcb

Answers

Modern vehicles don't like lengthy periods of inactivity, ideally you should take them out for a spin every month. As for your problems try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes then reconnecting it, this often resets the ECU. I suggest this because your 3 problems aren't usually connected in any way other than through the ECU (although you might actually have 3 separate faults). Mick from Portugal

What voltage have you got at the battery before you try to start it? Have you experimented by spraying some 'easy start' (I prefer the Aussie name for it - Start You Bast##rd) down the air intake and trying to start it? Mick from Portugal

Thanks mick for the tip called out the AA and he did what you said with the easy start spray down the air intake exactly what you said and it started right away not sure how to check the voltage on the battery the dealer fitted a new battery the first time it happened but there seems to be plenty of power in the battery I use a cut-off switch when Im not using the motorhome to save the power in the battery thanks again Paul p steward from Greater Manchester

The fact easy start got it fired up would get me looking at the cold start sensor and injector (burst of extra fuel for starting - easy start is a burst of highly inflammable fuel) or the glow plugs (heat the combustion chamber to aid starting from cold, aren't usually active when starting a hot engine) and then the crank position sensor. You can check the battery voltage with a multi-meter but as easy start worked there's no need to do it now. Mick from Portugal

Hi there I've just had new heat plugs fitted seemed to be ok for a week then she wouldn't start again so had new pump fitted in diesel tank the AA said she had low fuel pressure now sweet as a nut hope this help Kathy Kathy Elmore from Hertfordshire

Hi. My 2001 Boxer served me well, still is... Bought new without any serious problems I came across the first one! When turning the ignition key the dash board lights comes on as usual. The fuel heater light goes off and when trying to crank thr engine nothins happens! There is no sound coming from the starter nor any dashboard lights dim. If I try to do this with the head lihgts on (xenon lights) then the head lights dim but not the dashboard. Is it the starters fault, the ignition key, a fuse or something else. I very much appreciate your opinion Regards Kiri

Answers

Hello, Kiri did you get your issues solved? I do have almost exactly same phenomena going on with my 2001 Boxer 2,8 hdi. No staring signal reaching out to solenoid and starter. BR, Michael Michael from Finland

Herein is the problem of people not updating the site when they solve their problems. It could be immobiliser, ignition switch or starter motor. You have said no signal is reaching the starter, is that confirmed with a multi-meter or just an assumption because it's not starting? Mick from Portugal

Hello Mick, Still it is an assumption. I did a couple of times earlier, but then always cranked in the end. Funny thing is also that the oil level light is lit, even when I remove the keys. I would like to begin the fault searching with inspecting easily accesses areas then continuing with removing items one by one. //Michael Michael from Finland

With that additional information I'd look at the starter motor solenoid being the cause of the non starting. An old trick used to giving it a tap with a hammer whilst someone is trying to start it, if it then starts it's definitely the starter motor. Mick from Portugal

Need to replace the Brake Servo, because I had a faulty EGR Pipe that cracked when in France. A garage patched it up, but it ended up melting the fluid reservoir and Cam Belt top cover. Managed to obtain replacement parts but even though I have removed the master cylinder and vacuum pipe, the Brake Pedal Clevis Pin and the 4 nuts that secure the Servo to the Bulk Head inside the van, but it is stuck. I cant lever it away, Ive made a PULLING BRACKET that fixed onto the Master Cylinder studs and tried to pull it away using a heavy duty ratchet strap, and tried to knock the studs with a copper mallet. ANY IDEAS PLEASE ?

Answers

Have you disconnected the clevis pin that secures the brake rod to the brake pedal and undone the nuts securing the pedal bracket (4 nuts around where the brake rod enters the vehicle interior)? Mick from Portugal

Sorry, I just re-read your question to see you have done all that already except for removing the pedal bracket itself (which needs to be done, the air cleaner also needs to be removed). Have you tried running a sharp knife between the servo and the bulkhead to cut any mastic sealant that might have been used between the two faces. Mick from Portugal

The Air Filter is on the other side of the vehicle, so i don't think i need to touch that, but I did not realise that i would need to remove the pedal bracket. I will have a go in the morning. Thanks for your help Mick. Duncan Brierley from Lancashire

WHAT A BLOODY JOB. From the advice from Mick, I removed the o/s lower dash facia panel to gain access to the Pedal Bracket. I could not believe my eyes when I found that behind the Pedal Bracket, there are 4 more nuts and then another 2 to remove from the engine compartment, located higher up from the servo. Then I had to remove the EGR Pipes and Valve and the o/s engine mounting in order to lower the engine to allow the servo to be pulled out. Took ages. However, its all back together. ONE POINT, when lifting the Pedal Bracket away in order to gain access to the 4 nuts behind, I recommend to remove the plastic stop light switch as it would get damaged. Hope this helps others. Duncan Brierley from Lancashire

Thanks for posting the solution, so many don't bother which doesn't help others. Mick from Portugal

hi mick, the engine cuts out when turning on the headlights or main beam, but not everytime. Also it starts immediately after cutting out.

Answers

In that case I'd be thinking along the lines of there being some sort of voltage spike causing the ECU to throw a hissy fit. I don't know what the exact cause would be but I'd start by changing the light switch on the grounds that it wouldn't be too expensive and it is in effect the thing that causes the problem to manifest. I will be able to get my van back over the weekend and hopefully back in use by Monday as a courier van... I was wondering if there is anyone, who uses their van as a courier service and only doing city loops and short runs, have any recommendation for its maintenance... do you add any additives to the fuel to prevent the dpf from building up? if so what brand do you recommend and how often do you add it? any advice would be appreciated to prevent any further breakdown or going to limp mode... thanks.. kennedy

Read i could drain/ flush power steering fluid- might be bits in it? -and then put new fluid in- might this help? 2) Also when i turn the ignition on i get a brief view of a spanner few noughts where mileage shows up!- then disappears - the mileage then appears- all seems ok. Thanks, if anyone can advise- sorry- just trying to get used to my motorhome. General very happy with it- drives really well. Still under guarantee- have owned it now for 3 weeks.

The judder when you pull away on full lock is more likely to be caused by worn engine mounts or the clutch plate worn or contaminated with oil. Can't comment about the warning lights. Hugh from City of Glasgow
